Dissecting Dr. V’s Wisdom: Are You an Over Exfoliator?

Good day, beautiful Glow Getters. How are you glowing today?

In this time’s blog post; Dissecting Dr. V’s Wisdom, we’ll be talking about some serious business that we here at The GLOW Collective hold very dear and near to; which is skincare! That’s right, how many of us actually take skincare seriously? Or are you one of those people who just use shampoo in the shower but still attain such flawless skin? If that’s you, how does it feel to be God’s favorite? :D

In this 4th episode of The GLOW Collective Podcast, Dr. V takes it solo as she discusses mainly about skincare and the deep understanding of exfoliating.

Dr. V also talks about how to know if you’re using the right products based on your skin needs, what skin products you should use for your skin type, and how having the right mindset affects your physical appearence positively.

Dr. V is the dermatologist we all love to consult with-- and in this episode, she serves us all the much needed information we need to know to help our skin flourish and glow for FREE. That’s right, you’re getting the consultation for free in this one!

She advises that having a skincare routine should be something that we should all enjoy doing when we turn that into a process of self-love. Even though we all have our insecurities and flaws that appear on our skins, we should always embrace them as these things are what make us unique. Dr. V also advises to never take your skin for granted. It might seem fine and healthy, but without the proper care implied into your routine, we will never know how it would still be in the long run.

So how can we create a habit of a healthy mindset coming from a place of love within?

As Dr. V explains, she mentions to start off with the cleansers. Find a good cleanser that suits your skin type and goal. For this, Dr. V recommends an exfoliating cleanser for those who are acne prone and have oily skin.

Within these exfoliating cleansers, there are two types:

  1. Chemical - which functions for taking off the top layer of the skin

  2. Physical - which works in the barrier of the skin and are more organic such as sugar/coffee scrubs

Without doubt, these two types of exfoliators are very good for the skin but Dr. V recommends not to use physical exfoliators on the face but to use them on the rest of the body as they are more coarse and harsh for facial skin.

Dr. V elaborates that the chemical exfoliators contain hydroxy acids that also are broken down into two which are Alpha and Beta.

Here are some tips from Dr. V when you start using a chemical peel exfoliator:

  1. Choose a low percentage (1-2%)

  2. If it’s a glycolic/lactic/mandelic acid, start at a 10%

  3. A highly recommended product is by Biopelle

  4. Use a cream/gel ointment

  5. Avoid neck area

  6. If you are starting on a higher concentration, use less of it

Some other information that Dr. V shares is regarding skin regeneration. Dr. V explains that the acne improves quickest when you’re younger. Once you hit adulthood, the process of healing from acne lengthens as it takes a longer time to build up regenerating cells.

It is also important to add hyaluronic acid into your routine as well. Avoid any heavy oil-based moisturizer for acne prone skin. Hyaluronic acid and B5 are essential for supporting healthy skin barriers. If you’re using an exfoliator, remember to always apply sunscreen afterwards too. This is because at this point, your skin is more sensitive to sunlight especially with minimal exposure. Also take note that the best sunscreen is around SPF 30-40!

Towards the end of the episode, Dr. V gave us some important points to ponder on. So let’s take a moment to digest her words and think back about how we can apply this to our understanding.

Dr. V advises us to rewire our brain chemistry as we exfoliate for the intention of new skin. When new skin is generated, we should also allow other new things to come in. Regenerate with the skin. Begin listening to your body as a whole and understand what is needed for your own benefits. Shift your habits toward a positive standpoint and expect positive results!

With that being said, always do things for yourself with pure intentions.

We hope that this post was informative and educational for you. Please listen to the full length episode on Spotify, Apple Podcasts and many more!
